I’ve just sat and watched the morning’s coverage of the wedding of William and Kate (or as we should call her now, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge) and it was pleasing to see all the crowds turning out to join in and make the celebration such a memorable day. The sight of The Mall being filled with people wanting to be at the Palace, the crowds in Hyde Park and the many thousands lining the route from the Abbey to the Palace as well, reassured me that in this day and age, there is still fondness and respect for the Royals, even in this more sceptical age we live in. I am not scared to admit to being a royalist, with a romantic nature, who has been called by his wife, ‘a soppy git’.
I thought everything looked wonderful and just goes to show that although the UK isn’t the best and many things anymore, by God, we can do this bloody well!!!
Ok, there are the miserable gits, those who complain about the ‘parasites pageant’, and those that just couldn’t give a damn. Well that’s ok, it’s what freedom is all about, but to decry the pomp, the ceremony and the tradition, is to not understand what it’s all about. Some people take great delight in dragging the royal family down, saying they have no place in modern Britain. Yet these are the people who provided a foundation for the way Britain is today. Some people resent the fact they are there by birth and their place is not earned. That is the way of life; some people have, some people don’t. To try to equalise everyone to the same level is to try to turn humanity on its head. It was tried in the days of the USSR, and in the end it corrupted itself and fell apart. There will always be those who get their place by fortunate means.
Don’t forget that.
To say its all a waste of money, well, what with all the tourists etc being over from overseas (those who generally have no tradition matching ours) plus that everyone does tend to spend more in such a happy time, means that in the long run, UK plc will make a profit.
And for those who aren’t interested? Well sirs and madams, you obviously have no romance in your soul!!! Sometimes being too rational and practical is a canker on the soul.
