Sometimes, after a disappointment, you question why you continue doing what you do. It’s inevitable when things don’t go as you think they ought.
Travelling home down the M40 tonight, those few of us who travelled up the country to cheer on the lads of Hampton & Richmond Borough are now starting to ask that question.
We witnessed a performance that was inexplicably bad; the team playing in such a lacklustre and lifeless manner that we couldn’t believe that the lads could be hustled out of the game so easily.
The opposition, Northwich Victoria, groundless and having a tough time of life currently, came out on the front foot from the start and played like they really wanted to advance in the FA Trophy. The lads retreated to the back foot and by the time they got back into their stride they were already 2-0 down.
The game was pretty much over at 3-0 early in the second period, a well taken goal raised hopes at 3-1 but Northwich weren’t going to be denied and finished off the match as a contest with a penalty, leaving an embarrassing 4-1 defeat on the books.
The lights of the motorway are still flashing by as we speed home in the darkness, which only serves to cloak our disappointment as we ask ourselves that age old question…
This late night blogpost has been brought to you by a comfortable coach and a lack of alcohol…
