I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m somewhat out of step with my fellow footy fans in that I don’t care about the national team and have no interest in their progress, performances or results.
I wonder if it might be because I have no interest in the Premier league, think nothing of any of the players involved and don’t subscribe to the jingoistic belief that the team can win something.
England might have, to some opinions, the best league in the world but if you strip out all the imports, EU and beyond, and look at the underlying native talent, then we’re not a lot better than Norway.
There is an argument that having all the names in the Premier League means that the native players will improve, due to playing alongside these technically better players; but I don’t necessarily agree. I don’t think they have; in the 15-plus years of the PL, I think the quality of players in the national side has gone into reverse.
The solution? To be honest, I’m not sure there is one, but let’s face it, we’ve long since been an average European and World force; good enough to stand toe-to-toe with the best, but not good enough to beat them.
